Information for City of Chicago Residents on Purchase and Possession of Firearms

The City of Chicago passed an ordinance allowing its residents to purchase and possess certain firearms, including handguns for the purpose of home defense. There are strict rules outlined in the ordinance with which residents must comply.

Here are four steps in the order they must be completed:

  • Apply for an Illinois Firearm Owner's Identification Card (FOID). FOID Applications are available local Police Stations, on-line at the Illinois State Police web site, or you can visit GAT GUNS where we will take your ID photo, help you fill out the form and mail it to the Illinois State Police for you. Our fee for this service is $19.99 which includes the $10.00 FOID fee. FOID cards are good for 10 years.
  • Take a Chicago compliant training course.
  • Take your FOID card and proof of completing the training course to the Chicago Police Department to get a Chicago Firearms Permit (CFP).
